do you hear your hard drive churning away during shutdown?
Yes.

have you closed all programs prior to instructing it to shutdown?
No. I have explorer, systray and startupmonitor running all the time.

do you have NORTON systemworks or something similar installed on that machine
yes, I have run the one button check a few times with no error for almost a week.

What exactly does it mean when a hard drive makes a lot of noise? My old computer - WIN98 - sounds like it is grinding when booting up, and even during the course of the day - nothing new, it has always been really loud so I am not concerned. I actually had a tech support person working with me once on an issue and he couldn't believe how loud it was - he could hear it on his end!
