In America, and in Japan, there is far less reluctance to hire professional managers, give them real power, and grow the company.

The Japanese had no cultural business baggage. They went from a feudal system to modern capitalism with nothing much in-between.They jumped us after the war and we had to play catch-up. The euros kept a superior attitude and old-fashioned business methods.

My short exposure to Italy in the 50s showed me that Southern and Northern Italy were two different countries, with the south way behind. I assume it is still the same.

Same with the food. Our immigration was from the poorer south and we got the "red sauce" resturants. The northern food claims to be where French crusine got it's start, and I agree.

(08-21) 18:19 PDT LAS VEGAS (AP) --

Odds are California voters will recall Gov. Gray Davis, according to a Las Vegas oddsmaker who makes musclebound Arnold Schwarzenegger a slim favorite to win the election.

Las Vegas oddsmaker America's Line made it a 2-7 sure thing that Davis will be recalled and installed the Republican Schwarzenegger as a 7-5 pick to be the state's next governor.

With his wealthy supporters and high-profile advisers, Schwarzenegger is the "initial favorite right out of the box," said Benjamin Eckstein, America's Line president.

Eckstein characterized Schwarzenegger's advantage over Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, an 8-5 favorite, as paper thin.

Davis, a Democrat, is a 5-2 choice to retain his seat Oct. 7.

A pair of Republicans, former baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth (12-1) and businessman Bill Simon (20-1), are followed by two candidates at 40-1 odds, independent commentator Arianna Huffington and Republican state Sen. Tom McClintock. Green Party candidate Peter Camejo is a 50-1 pick.

Among the longer-shot candidates, Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and actor Gary Coleman were 500-1 to reach the governor's mansion in Sacramento. All other candidates were set at 1,000-1.

The odds were set for entertainment value only. Nevada's sports books aren't allowed to accept wagers on elections or events other than sports contests and races.

Eckstein said his company, which supplies odds to 125 newspapers in the United States and Canada, has had success predicting political races in the past. His outfit picked George W. Bush to win the 2000 presidential election.
