I wonder what those who say we should have avoided the war would say if it were Hitler in 1939 that was being discussed. There were many arguing then not to get involved, that it wasn't "our" war, that he was no danger to "us."

That's a good analogy. Then as now, the world sat by as a rogue nation invoked the right to preventive war, invading another country out of "self-defense". While nobody like the Polish military junta in 1939, the effect of its removal was far more widespread than expected, because it emboldened the remover. The same holds true today.
