' When Neruda, not yet thirty, came to Barcelona as the
Chilean consul, he was welcomed in lyrical strain by García
Lorca, with words that are already classic: "A poet nearer
death than philosophy, nearer pain than intelligence, nearer
blood than ink; a poet possessed by mystical voices which he
fortunately cannot interpret, a real man who knows that the
reed and the swallow are more immortal than the hard cheek
of a statue." Those who are not prepared to agree with Lorca's
balanced, yet inspired, greeting to this fellow poet, five years
his junior, look for support instead in Jiménez's concise
judgement: "A great bad poet."

Interesting about Neruda's nick, i never heard that ... it also sounds close to nervudo, which means 'gristly', 'hard to chew' sort of, it's the adjective to nervio, which can mean 'nerve' and/or 'lot of gristle' .... still got to make it to Praha one time MD, what a place, great beer [which is the source of my nick, as you know] and a fascinating history .... just this from your link here is enough - 'the infamous second Prague defenestration in 1618' ... somehow you just know they're not talking about taking out the windows and replacing with screen for the summer, lol

Ars longa, vita brevis ...... 'art is long, life is short' ... in latin .... oh oh look, double zero PLUS Tammy Wynette singing Stand By Your Man on the radio, ah life may be short my friend but it is sweet ... but back to earth, this is SI, perhaps more appropriate might be -
