With the high costs of employing more Fire and Police cities and counties have found it's cheaper to pile on the over time than hire new. They've put off hiring and now we're going to have to pay the piper for those decisions.
I read a couple weeks or so ago, the City of Oakland is facing a shortfall of police. They have a higher than average percentage of those out for this or that ailment. Plus some on probation and another pile retiring earlier than expected with more retiring at an accelerated rate.
Regardless of the city retirements are coming hot and furious. Now that they are credited with 3% per year after 20 than the 2% they had up until 99.
