In this "war" there is only one currency -- legitimacy. We thought that wars are won with depleted uranium and airstrikes. But in this war, firepower itself is useless. When we invaded Iraq without the UN we made our first mistake. Now, by scorning the leading role of the UN we are compounding that mistake. Bombing the UN underscores what everybody already knew -- the UN will be hard pressed to do much to salvage the illegitimacy of our invasion. And we won't do anything to help ourselves because we still think this war is about military tactics -- it is about legitimacy, and we are losing badly.
