In medieval armies, farmers with horses would be hired, to haul the artillery and other heavy gear. Unfortunately, these non-soldiers would sometimes leave, taking their horses with them, at the most inopportune times. Like just when the enemy pike-men were about to storm the hill where the artillery was. The better armies learned not to privatise this task, as only soldiers could be depended on, to keep doing the job, when the going gets tough.

Poor logistics, not being able to get enough bullets and bread to the soldiers under all conditions, this has defeated more armies than any other reason. Privatizing your logistics train is a sign of weakness in any army. A privatized logistics system will work, when it isn't under stress, and then fail disastrously at exactly the worst moment.
