I viewed that website with skepticism too, at first, but the Monterey Herald indeed had the original article.

The letter is one thing; I don't, and didn't, doubt its existence. The editorial haberdashery and unsubstantiated claims orbiting it in the World Socialist website is something else entirely.

I also cross-checked some of the other articles with info that I'm familiar (macro-econ stuff) and the data and analysis match.

What do those "other articles" - or the unspecified "cross-check[ing]" of "data and analysis" - have to do with the relationship between this...

montereyherald.com

...and this?

wsws.org

So, although the "World Socialist's" may appear, at first blush a reference lacking credibility...

Completely, and not just at 'first blush.'

...upon further scrutiny it is apparently legit and factually accurate.

What "scrutiny" did you focus on the article itself? And what leads you to believe that other articles - which, your having used the terms "data" and "analysis," leads me to believe were quantitative in nature - serve as an accurate proxy for the legitimacy of this article?
