I know Gore won. He won the popular vote, no rightwing crank can deny that. He would have easily won Florida if Bush's brother hadn't been in power and if they weren't using 3rd World voting techniques, like punch cards, in parts of the state. It wouldn't have even been close. And, as you say Gore and his team were outmanuvered once the vote recount was underway.

BTW, Gore is going to go down in history as one of the biggest political weenies of all time. He had the longest economic expansion at his back and a generally happy populace that was relatively comfortable with a Democrat in the White House. If he had any political savvy at all, he would have walked away with the 2000 election easily. Of course, Clintons antics during his last year in office didn't help Gore any. It made people in the South really want a change. Amazing how Clinton and Gore mishandled the transition. If Clinton had resigned after impeachment, Gore would have been unbeatable in 2000. Or, if Clinton had just tried to behave for his final year in the White House it would have lessend the anti-Clinton backlash in 2000 and Gore would have won. Gore couldn't win his own state of Tennesee, that's pretty lame!
