Hawk - Energy issues will increasingly become a major focal point of the world. Many will poo poo assertions that global oil production may have peaked or be within 2-3 mbpd of peaking as producers are struggling to stay on a plateau with Saudia Arabia struggling to convince the world that there is something more behind the throttle than there is. i.e. there is not much left in the swing of the swing producer.

We will need a stable Iraq, Saudia Arabia and other ME countries just to ensure we can keep oil available at its present pricing levels. Iraq is needed to offset production declines in other producer nations and offer any hope along with SA of providing a net increase in global production.

The West has grown rich in part as a result of our involvement exploiting the ME's oil resources before they wised up and booted us out in the 70's. Today's cost of rebuilding Iraq is the moral thing to do considering what we have gained over the years and as a result of keeping them contained with Saddam for a decade. Regardless of these considerations, once we entered Iraq leaving the country less stable than it was with Saddam is not an option.

You speak of our needing the change the course for the hundreds of millions of young Muslims. Most of these people are no where near the industrialization level of growing Asian economies that are dependent on stable oil flow.

Failure in Iraq would have a tremendous impact on billions of people.
