Don,

Re: It sounded like an endless list of paper sorters, report writers, sock counters, etc.. In other words, button sorters entirely unnecessary to the core purpose of the military.

Rumsfeld is way ahead of you. He started privatizing when he first became SECDEF. The result was a sweetheart contrarct with HAL's KBR unit to supply logistics for the troops in GW II. The report from the field is that KBR feel down on the job, failing to show up when the fighting got intense. So our boys were left in the lurch with too little water, too few M.R.E.s and no real meals and nada for sanitation, shelter, etc.

Basically, the privatization of non-combat services for the military has just been shown to be a bust, a bad policy directive and basically wrong-headed.
