I guess the "cost" comparison depends upon your perspective. For those that see control of oil as a weapon to hold China and the Mideast in check and as a tool to keep America's economy fueled, the "cost" of Iraqi oil may be seen as justified. For those that have lost, and will lose, sons and daughters to pay for it, the cost must seem very high. As for me, I always thought that we could compete our way to the top rather than steal it at the point of a gun.
