The ending is everything. That is what I missed when I saw it.

Here we have a story where the detective is the typical compulsive, with a hunch. No body buys the hunch but famous detective has gone against the odds (and his captain or mayor or something) throughout his career to save the day. Famous detective is thought to be a crazy wacko who puts way to much at risk to win the day, but is always vindicated in the end. Jack does that this time too. He is, in fact, right as always but; not even he realizes it and does not appear to save the day at the end.

Was he always a crazy compulsive wacko as everyone imagined? Or brilliant and misunderstood. Was it just the pledge that drove him over the edge? Or had he always been over but getting away with it. I thought it was an excellent story to show how thin is the line between eccentric complusion and full goose bozo...Glorified hero/pathetic psycho...competent over achiever/flailing loser...

and how one might move from a valid position of dignity to an equally valid position of disgrace; without having changed much of anything.
