I am either harmed by your comment or I am not. I may choose to deal with you or the information in a variety of ways. I may, in fact, view the comment as inappropriate but not feel harmed by it. In which case I would not feel/be insulted. That does not mean that the comment would not be insulting (harmful) to others that are implicated by it. Miss Manners (society) may accurately label it an insult, even though I have not been personally harmed by it.


Okay. I think we have reached agreement. I laid this out in a post I just made.

If I choose not to be harmed by your remark, I am not insulted.

But if society chooses to be harmed by your remark, they HAVE been insulted.

So it can be not an insult to the intended recipient, but can be an insult to society.

We seem to be in agreement on this. I wonder whether Karen will agree with this distinction too?
