It seems like you understood me. I would add one other component is that the insult does not have to be intended.

Oh dear. We were doing so well.

I do have trouble with that last addition -- the idea that I can be innocently talking with somebody and suddenly, with no intention at all, say something that he takes as insulting, and so I have by your standards insulted him.

I really should get back to work, but let me ask one clarifying question. Suppose Miss Manners hears the remark and doesn't consider it in the least insulting. So it was not intended as an insult, and society doesn't regard it as insult, but the person I was speaking to took it as an insult. By your definition, am I still guilty of insulting the person?
