Hopefully someone will respond that has dealt with multiple drives. I haven't.

I am planning to install a second hard drive on my windows XP machine. The second hard drive also has XP installed on it, with a bunch of programs from an older machine. Any tips, advice or warnings?

Ron,

Could it be as easy as hook up the drive, let windows detect it, and you're off to the races? Just in case it turns out to be a bit more difficult, here's a few points that came to mind:

You have to configure the jumpers on your new drive and your existing drive to accommodate your motherboard and your other IDE hardware, like cd roms and dvds.

After you get all the connections how you want them and correct ;-) then, after restarting, you'll have to set up a dual boot for the other XP os. Look up "Installing more than one operating system on your computer" in Windows XP help. There is some good information there.

BTW, you won't be able to run programs across operating systems. You'll have to boot from the disk that contains the program you want to run. Of course data sharing is no problem across the drives.

Another point to consider is the type of file system on the two drives. If they are already the same, great.

If you have specific questions or problems with something, by all means ask here. Someone usually knows.
