THE SITUATION
The seventh inning of a one-game playoff between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox for the AL East title. Dent, a .243 hitter with four home runs during the season, came to the plate with two out. Dent lofted a 1-1 pitch from Torrez, the Boston starter, over the Green Monster -- the 37-foot wall in left field -- to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead.
