<<<While Dean's answers on health care and jobs drew approval from the audience, he had a tougher time responding to reporters' questions about issues of importance to Washington state voters.

Dean declined to take a position on the long-running controversy over whether to breach hydroelectric dams on the Snake River to aid endangered salmon runs, saying he didn't know enough to venture an opinion. ``I hope to have an answer next time I'm in Washington,'' he said.

The Vermont governor also said he did not know enough about a deal to lease, rather than buy outright, new planes from Boeing to replace the Air Force's aging air tanker fleet.

``It's a good idea in general to do something for Boeing,'' he said.
