ComEd asks FERC for OK to boost transmission rates
Friday September 12, 6:30 pm ET

WASHINGTON, Sept 12 (Reuters) - Chicago-based utility Commonwealth Edison Co. on Friday said it asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for permission to raise its transmission rates by about 24 percent to recover $500 million it spent over the last five years on grid improvements.

The Exelon Corp. (NYSE:EXC - News) subsidiary said its wants to raise transmission access charges to $1.18 per kilowatt-month from 95 cents, effective Nov. 1.

The utility said the increased rates would affect wholesale customers and some businesses but not residents, whose rates are frozen by state law until 2007.
