Fred (and apparently you, too) seem to forget that freedom also promotes mediocrity, that not everyone is mentally and/or emotionally equipped to become Nobel Prize winners. Nevertheless, I agree that our culture is slowly becoming more and more mediocre, lazier, and fatter. It's unfortunately a sign of our success. There are no life or death struggles on the horizon like there were during WWII to sharpen our edge and focus our collective energies. The struggles that count take place between our ears--and a lot of us are pacifists in that war.

Perhaps the Islamists are doing us a favor.
