Vertical integration seems to be a continuum, where any particular level chosen has its own set of risks and rewards. I'm not sure it strictly matters where the heads are from so long as the drive maker can get as many as they need at prices that are reasonable. If it is critical for them to obtain heads from a US-based firm, they will soon be able to purchase them from WDC, if they don't mind purchasing from a competitor. (g)

Do you have any idea who makes the head-making equipment, what specific processes or steps are involved in the process of making heads, and the specific level of expertise necessary to design the next generation of heads?
