China seeks foreign banks role

BEIJING:

China is encouraging foreign banks to participate in the country's banking reform by buying bigger stakes in domestic financial institutions, state Press reported yesterday.

China will raise the current limit of any one foreign investor in commercial banks to 25 per cent from 15pc, the International Finance News reported, citing Liu Mingkang, chairman of the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC).

At a meeting of the heads of foreign banks in China held in Shanghai, Liu pledged the commission would strengthen its regulation of foreign banks operating in the country, with a focus on risk supervision.

"Generally speaking, foreign bank operations in China remain smooth and stable, but certain risks still demand attention," the Liu said.
