11:46AM Gold stocks gain amid rise in gold futures to 3-mo high ($GOX, CDE, NEM, ABX) by Tomi Kilgore
NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- The gold sector was among the day's strongest amid a surge in gold futures, with the CBOE Gold Index ($GOX) climbing 3.6 percent. December gold futures shot up $6.90 to $373.70, and reached a 3-month high of $374.80 earlier in the session, amid speculation that the International Monetary Fund would extend the "Washington accord," which limits the amount of gold central banks can sell. A decline in the U.S. dollar also helped provide support for the precious metal. The euro rose 0.4 percent vs. the buck to $1.0901, after hitting a 4-month low of around $1.0789 on Tuesday. Among the more active gold stocks, Coeur d'Alene Mines (CDE) tacked on 20 cents to $2.91, Newmont Mining (NEM) rose $1.37 to $39.11 and Barrick Gold (ABX) advanced 52 cents to $19.95.
