"Chris says everyone lies on the stand anyway"

People look after their self interest. It was rare (and it is now rarer) to find martyrs who give their life rather than compromise their intellectual honour. This, of course, is the extreme case. However, I have had some experience with people, and I am reasonably convinced that most people will lie when it furthers self interest...

"As for the underlying purpose, well, Chris says everyone lies on the stand anyway. So just have people solemnly promise to tell the truth and be done with it."

There is something wrong with a system that sets people up to fail from the git go. Perhaps we should ask them to promise to lie?

Chris says everyone lies on the stand

I don't recall every saying everyone. What I said was that some people do, in spite of the oath they take, since they know that perjury is almost never prosecuted.
