I don't think "The Des Moines Register Editorial Board" understands the nature of a Tar Baby. It's never easy, and frequently impossible to extract one's self from a Tar Baby. You can struggle, but you only get deeper ensnared. While I agree with

the experience will have taught a powerful lesson. The invasion put into action a neoconservative theory about establishing an American empire and routinely dispatching troops to topple any government we don't like. That thinking has been shown to be bloody nonsense.

That's akin to saying "Oh, I wish I hadn't been so stupid as to get into this Tar Baby!" Sorry, doesn't help. What's needed is some solvent to dissolve the tar - and more troops won't do it.
