I have a problem with the perspective in which the conflict is framed. A war is a war. Wars are not ended by compromise, they are ended by one side defeating the other. There may be some face saving gestures but in general they end with a clear winner. The victorious harbors resentment and contempt toward its defeated enemy and, in addition, views the enemy as reduced to a lesser value. The defeated experience loss and, as such, struggle with resentment, pain, and anger over the outcome.

Any compromise that does not satisfactorily resolve the issues leaves both sides struggling with their victor/defeated identity.

My approach would be to find (struggling in the process, if need be) a resolution that satisfactorily resolves the key issues for the stakeholders. I do not believe “innocuousness” does that. In fact, it promotes societal apathy and counterfeit culture…yuckie…
