I am not sure I understand your implied point?

Whether or not people tell the truth is strictly based on what they believe about the value of truth telling as juxtaposed against the negative possibilities which may acrue. There are many reasons why one may wish to tell the truth, and there are many reasons why one may not. It depends on a balancing of personal values. Obviously, most people would lie to save the life of their daughter, for instance--even if they were "religious". But there are some who would tell their "truth" even if it meant her death. It is always self interest because it always relates to the values and motives of the chooser.
