"Is hanging one relevant commandment instead of the ten sweeping something under the carpet?

No. I like that suggestion. I was thinking of your "wink" comment. I doubt that it would resolve the differences but I reeeeeeally would like to see the importance of elevating that issue in court promoted.

"Or should I focus instead on where you said one side had to crush the other?

That is not my position. If you re-read that post, you might see that I was objecting to the perspective of treating the conflict as a war. I promoted resolution that is satisfactory to both sides, not the defeat of one side.

"When faced with evolution vs. creation in seven days, most rational Christians struggle for a while and then eventually come around to the notion that the seven day thing wasn't literal and that works for them..."

Right. But it wasn't just that they were tired of arguing and wanted some "winkie" compromise. They were convinced by the opposing argument that teaching evolution did not insult the Bible.

Likewise with the courts, it seems we can come up with an argument that accommodates both sides without discounting either. But, it will not likely be easy and not without letting the fist pounders have their day.
