Totalitarians are a fairly clever lot. They understand that political control isn't a matter of convincing the entire population of the righteousness of the domination of the few. The Bushies realize that they only have to sell the "Big Lieā„¢" to the average un-informed, harried and disinterested member of the general populace.

The dictators never fear the intelligentsia, such as is witnessed on SI valiantly attempting to get people to understand the truth. No, dictators and dictator-wannabees like Bush know that they only have to have a loyal Party, a contented Police Apparatus and a cowed public in order to engage in humanity's most heinous crimes.

The fact that we few here wail about the injustice of the naked aggression of Bush in Iraq, or the destruction of children's futures by imposing carcinogens in their air by means of pollution is of no consequence to the fascists/Nazis/Marxist Right. They don't care what we think, because they know that, in general, America isn't a thinking nation.

Until recently, I would have agree with you completely. However, I don't think you are entirely right. I think presidencies like Bush's come along fairly regularly. I think the people who support those presidencies pretty much understand the game that's being played and go along with it because they hold the same values. I think they are the ones who try to stifle criticisms by accusing the criticizer of being unAmerican or unpatriotic. As we've seen with Bush, this approach can be very effective. They are the ones who got the Dixie Chicks CDs burned and went after Sarandon and Robbins. They tend to be rich and powerful and believe in the concept of noblesse oblige. However, these people are in the minority.

Like you said above, I think the majority of Americans are to busy and too harassed to pay much attention to the game playing of a few. On paper, Bush looked good and 9/11 was such an horrific event, they decided the right thing was to unite behind the president. However, over time, people like the bushies begin to show their hand. They really don't have the same views/values as the majority and like feathers in a ripped pillow, things keep popping out at the worst possible moment. Eventually, the majority begins to get an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of their stomachs. Things are not what they thought and no matter how quickly the Bushies put the feathers back in the pillow, they can't hide the fact that the pillow is ripped.

I think that's where we're at now. The Bushies have blown their cover. This always comes as a surprise to them because they think of themselves as being richer and smarter than the average guy. Eventually, however, its their undoing. The danger, of course, is that one day they decide not to play within the rules and instead, make up the rules as they go along.
