He blames everything, including all of Saddam's crimes, on American "imperialism." And he lumps anyone who shows patriotism to be arrogant, chauvenistic, imperialistic, and racist (no, I kid you not, #reply-18767052). The link in Harris's post is dead. I did a google search and found De Genova's response to the criticism of his original thesis. I would suggest you read it carefully and without nationalistic hysteria. The link is below. Much of what he says is rooted in truth.....does he push the envelope. Yes! But the envelope does not need to be pushed hard for him to make his point.......unfortunately! And before you scream at me, do your homework on American history. Until the 60s, we were white supremacists. Our minorities definitely had second tier status in our society. What do you think the sit ins of the 50s and the racial riots of the 60s were all about? And while things have improved since that time, ask yourself how many Jews have been president of the US? How many women? How many blacks? How many Asians? How many Catholics? With one exception in our 200+ year history, why have all our presidents been White Anglo Saxon Protestants [WASPs]. Why is the majority of the wealth still locked up with the WASPs? In international politics, our involvement has not always been benign.......far from it. I could point out details but why bother.......its unpatriotic to point out our flaws; the mistakes we have made; the crimes that we have perpetuated in the name of God and freedom. Are we worse than most nations? No. Are we better than some? Yes.....the obvious ones like the dictators. But there are other nations that do a better job of contributing to the well being of the world. And lets talk about nationalism........a favorite of the American right. Many of the western nations have been playing down nationalism for some time.......particularly in Europe. The first time I ran into that was the Germans about 12 years ago. They told me that nationalism was not encouraged after what happened in WW II. At the time, I felt sorry for the Germans. Now, I understand better why its a good thing. The irony is that the only western nation that is as nationalistic as us is France. And when you look at France, their image is one of an immature, petty country. That should tell us something about ourselves but we would never look that closely. For this world to survive, nationalism has to diminish greatly among all nations including the US. The American right's concerns with nationalism, sovereignty and patriotism are reactionary and not of great benefit to us in the 21st century. De Genova is an extremist but not by as much as you and the right seem to think. Now let the flaming begin............. hnn.us
