Docs, RNs, LVNs, CNAs: nearly half are immigrants, while the medical transcriptions take place overnight in India. In the strict sense of the phrase, you are right, of course. Most of these jobs stay right here, so the local community benefits more directly. Those folks are from parents willing to make huge sacrifices so their kids get well educated. Most Americans are not willing to do the same so the top colleges get the top students from abroad. It is more profitable for a dr/lawyer pair to have healthy folks go to the Dr for multiple visits to run up bills after an auto accident than it is for them to do real work. Afterall, treating a bogus patient requires no effort other than fill out the paperwork to collect money from medical insurance. Folks wonder why the trial lawyers and Dr's give so much money to CA politicians.... while few will be able to afford the higher disability insurance next year and I expect a mass exodus from CA. What we need to do is put the criminals in jail who lie, cheat, spend all their time looking for legal ways to screw the government, etc. It is far more profitable for an investment bank to charge 20% to save some billionaire $50M on his taxes then it is to put that time into looking for a good startup to invest in. I have an IIT educated friend who keeps telling me Americans don't have a reason to work hard to become highly skilled as the real money is in screwing folks legally. He worked at Cisco and was a huge critic of their bookkeeping and how the companies were all set up to make insiders rich selling option acquired shares to the public as they used stock to buy other companies to show earnings growth and get even higher prices. A pyramid scheme. Just ask Ken Lay and Bernie Ebbers. Kirk
