<<...Senators who voted for the war probably should have known that Bush was going to war no matter what the UN did or what inspectors did not find. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, however, they (naively) assumed good faith on the part of Bush. The war resolution did lead to greater, unfettered inspections. Under a less cynical President, it might also have led to other measures to weaken and maybe bring down Saddam without war (e.g., "smart sanctions" war crimes indictment for Saddam, cohesive international pressure led by the US).

All this might be true: the fact is that the war started a year ago this summer with the intensified bombing. Something like 606 bombs were dropped on command and control sites and radar instalations. Special Ops were working in Iraq for months before the 3ID rolled. The war DID NOT start when the troops went in. That was all smoke...>>

It'll be interesting to see how far the UN Security Council falls for Bush & Co line of bullshit this time. Kofi Annan wants in on the Iraq operation in order to enhance his own prestige, but he won't be sending any soldiers or money. Will anyone else?

It appears to me Bush & Co are getting very very desperate to find an escape route from the Iraq mess. It hasn't worked out for them politically and it shows every sign of getting worse before getting disastrous. Dragging the UN in might provide enough smoke for them to sneak out the back door, proclaim victory (the way they proclaimed the end of the war)and move on to more lucrative operations--ones that don't endanger Dubya's politcal health the way the Iraq fiasco has.
