As the mother of a son stationed in Afghanistan, I know that we need a coherent foreign policy that is strong on terrorism without sacrificing human rights and embroiling us in quagmires where are troops are in danger with no apparent plan or goal in sight. As a teacher, I know we need more than the empty rhetoric of "No Child Left Behind." As a "boomer", I know that something must be done to improve the employment situation and deal with soaring health care costs. Simple and simple-minded tax cuts are not the answer! Please run.

It is critical that the Democrats field the strongest possible candidate in order to defeat George Bush and the Republicans and: - Restore fiscal integrity to the federal government; - Reverse tax policies that increase the disparity of wealth which is already the highest of any western democracy; - End the cowboy diplomacy that has isolated the United States in world opinion and served only to feed the recruiting ranks of the terrorists; - Tone down the culture wars and their chilling effect on civil liberties; - Embody a vision of the national character that is reflective of the character of individual Americans, not a contradiction of that character; a vision of America that is creative and diverse, competent and compassionate, sophisticated but not condescending, brave but not arrogant, competitive but not every man for himself, prosperous and generous, and strong but not aggressive; and - Restore a sense that Americans can look to their own leader to articulate America's foreign policies rather than having to look to the British for this. As a 52-year-old, I've lived through many administrations. I have never been as dissatisfied with government leadership as I am today. The current administration has brought shame and embarassment to our country. We have been disgraced by our invasion of Iraq. Dear Gen. Clark: I'm sending this letter via the website "draftwesleyclark.com," although I wanted to skip the pre-formulated text they included. I've spent the last few hours following every link on this site to try to learn more about you and your positions on the issues. It seems that the more I learn, the more I feel that you are simply the right man for the Democratic Party and for the country. Two of your main themes really spoke to me. First, I wholeheartedly agree with your insistance that terrorism should be fought with partners, not alone. Second, I agree with your focus on using technology and innovation to preserve our environment. I should mention that I'm 24 years old--national elections don't seem to address voters like me very much. (My friends and I don't exactly run to the polls to weigh in on Social Security and prescription drugs.) But younger voters do care passionately about the future--as I know from talking from my many American friends, and also many European friends that I've made while studying overseas. What we hope for is a safer world. That means safety for everyone, not just Americans, and safety from oppression and poverty, not just terrorism. I hope that you'll run for president. And I hope that you can run a positive campaign, one that does not just preach to the Democratic faithful. Dear Mr. Clark, My name is Steve. I am a 19 year old college student from New Jersey currently attending Rutgers University. I’m politically aware (have been for a long time), and have been searching for a candidate that best represents my views and attitudes toward the current domestic and world events that have rocked our world, so to speak, in recent years. As a “history and politics buff”, I’ve read several books on history and attended seminars in Washington DC for young, politically active people such as myself. I even went to President Bush’s inauguration to observe our great democracy in action. But in the past couple years since 9/11, I’ve seen what I would consider some of the most reckless policy making in American history, and it has me worried. I’ve also seen many moderate Democrats, notably those in Congress, simply stop really acting as an effective opposition party, thereby throwing off the balance our two party system offers and leaving many of us basically feeling voiceless. Though I usually align myself with the Democrats, I’m not one to vote for a Democratic candidate just because he or she is Democratic. Similarly I am not against current President Bush on the basis that he is a Republican, I oppose him on the basis that I believe we are worse off and live in a less safe world than we did before he entered office. I’ve known about you and your career since the Kosovo predicament, and was thrilled to hear on CNN that you’ve been a possible candidate for the President of the United States on a Democratic ticket. Since then, I’ve read about where you stand and have watched you on such programs as CNN’s Crossfire, and I was blown away at everything you had to say. There was no rhetoric, just straight, intelligent, factual talk about what you believe in, almost all of which I agree with. There was not a stammer, nor single hint of hesitation in what you had to say regarding your beliefs. The only hesitation I detected from you was in whether you would choose a party and run for President at all. Currently I support Howard Dean, as I like his message and the strength he seems to carry with him. However, and I must emphasize this, I believe you would make a MUCH better candidate than him. Your stance on domestic policies including such controversial issues as abortion and the Patriot Act are right on target. Your extensive experience and ideas on our foreign policy including the need to be more multilateral and smarter in fighting this War on Terror are similarly exactly what I believe is the right path for our nation. In short, Mr. Clark, I believe you are the PERFECT man for the job. You’re intelligent, well spoken, charismatic, well-educated, and have the experience necessary to become what I think could be one of the most successful administrations our nation has had. You’re reluctance to run only proves that you’re exactly what this nation needs at this dark time. And so I implore you sir, please run. The second you announce your candidacy is the second I switch from a half-hearted Dean supporter to a whole-hearted Clark campaigner, and I don’t think I’m the only one. I would do whatever it takes to help your campaign. The only thing stopping the Draft Clark campaign from taking off in a groundswell of support is the fact that most people I talk to have never heard of you, or if they have, don’t know what you stand for. Dear General Clark, What is the worst that can happen if you declare your candidacy? At the VERY LEAST, greater exposure, will allow more people the chance to hear the truth on many issues. Your magnificent abilities with the English language will force some real, honest statements from other candidates. The average citizen, who has not been required to study the Constitution will learn something about it during your debates. Many people, like myself have not yet recovered from the transparent abuse of the system during and since the last presidential election. A conspiracy cannot be exposed when it is shamelessly done in the open without consequence. Since that day, the present administration has continued to shred the Constitution before the eyes of the people, but if the people don’t know what is really being done, they will accept the lies and the empty flag waving. When you speak, I learn. As a former Parliamentary Debate coach on the Ivy League Circuit, I know how much information can be conveyed during a strong, healthy debate. Your ideas being more widely disseminated will, in itself begin to inform the uninformed who are too lazy to get the information just for the sake of knowing. If the worst that can happen does happen, the people will still benefit. As many of us see it, “the worst that can happen” should really be “the beginning of what can happen” and we’ll have a president who will be a statesman rather than a politician.
