General poised to enter race for White House
____________________________

Wesley Clark 'has made his choice'

Julian Borger in Washington
Friday August 29, 2003
The Guardian

General Wesley Clark, a former US general who commanded Nato's war in Kosovo, is poised to announce whether he will run for the White House next month and enter the Democratic primaries, party officials said yesterday.

Gen Clark has mounted a media blitz over the past few weeks, appearing on a string of television talk shows to discuss his critical views on US policy in Iraq.

He has also won his wife's approval, which had been a major hurdle to entering the race, a Democratic official, who supports a Clark candidacy, said.

"You're looking at someone who has already made his choice," the official said.

The New York Times yesterday quoted an unnamed friend of the ex-soldier as saying: "He is going to do it. He's just going back and forth as to when."

However, another official said Gen Clark was mulling over a final decision. He is said to be trying to assess his chances in the Democratic primary elections, particularly against Howard Dean, the former governor of Vermont, who has taken a similarly strong line in criticism of the administration's foreign policy and who has already raised a campaign fund of about $20m (£12.7m).

Two internet-based groups - draftclark.com and DraftWesleyClark.com - have been promoting his candidacy for several weeks, and the latter claims to have collected pledges of over $1m in campaign contributions.

The general has said he will make a final announcement in the next few weeks. One possible date for a declaration could be September 19, when he is due to make a speech in Iowa, the site next January of the first party caucuses to choose a Democratic presidential contender.

John Zogby, who runs a political polling organisation, said a survey suggested that a Clark candidacy would be well received."Believe it or not, it looks like it could be pretty good for him," Mr Zogby said.

"The major pre-declared frontrunners have generally not caught on in the national polls."

In one recent poll, Gen Clark won 5% support. However, when Mr Zogby presented would-be voters with a short description of the general's career, he beat George Bush in a poll by 49% to 40%.

Mr Dean has emerged as the frontrunner among the nine Democratic contenders in the race so far, both in terms of fundraising and popular support, but many Democratic centrists believe he is too radical to win in a head-on contest with President Bush.

Gen Clark has been outspoken in his criticism of the Bush administration's decision to invade Iraq without broad international backing and on "false pretences".

He has had less to say about domestic policies, but has publicly supported affirmative action for minorities and criticised the Bush tax cuts as fiscally irresponsible and unfair.

He has stumbled occasionally under the increasingly intense media scrutiny, making claims that the administration had pressured him to change his line on Iraq and then prevent him appearing on CNN, but he refused to provide details to support the charges.

As the mother of a son stationed in Afghanistan, I know that we need a coherent foreign policy that is strong on terrorism without sacrificing human rights and embroiling us in quagmires where are troops are in danger with no apparent plan or goal in sight. As a teacher, I know we need more than the empty rhetoric of "No Child Left Behind." As a "boomer", I know that something must be done to improve the employment situation and deal with soaring health care costs. Simple and simple-minded tax cuts are not the answer! Please run.

Dear General Clark: I have never participated in an election campaign before. Now I feel compelled to become active in the process of “retaking” our Country and restoring the principles that we value. I hereby volunteer to do whatever I can to help elect you as our next President and I assure you I will have great pride in having been a part of the effort. Please, for all of us who feel helpless before the current administration, announce your candidacy by September 1, 2003 and let’s get to work!

General Clark, America needs you. Please run for president. It is critical that the Democrats field the strongest possible candidate in order to defeat George Bush and the Republicans and: - Restore fiscal integrity to the federal government; - Reverse tax policies that increase the disparity of wealth which is already the highest of any western democracy; - End the cowboy diplomacy that has isolated the United States in world opinion and served only to feed the recruiting ranks of the terrorists; - Tone down the culture wars and their chilling effect on civil liberties; - Embody a vision of the national character that is reflective of the character of individual Americans, not a contradiction of that character; a vision of America that is creative and diverse, competent and compassionate, sophisticated but not condescending, brave but not arrogant, competitive but not every man for himself, prosperous and generous, and strong but not aggressive; and - Restore a sense that Americans can look to their own leader to articulate America's foreign policies rather than having to look to the British for this. Alone among the announced and unannounced Democratic contenders, you have the stature, bearing, style, and intelligence to bring about the change this country needs. You have the ability to appeal to disillusioned mainstream Republicans, Independents, and the traditional core of the Democratic party, without the negatives that attach to other candidates' close identification with narrow interests such as labor unions and trial attorneys. The tragedy of 9/11 demonstrated that America, like Europe before us, is vulnerable to attack from terrorists. Clearly, America is demanding in its next President firm resolve to defend this country against further attack. However, other Democratic candidates often come across as tentative if not downright pacificist. In a quieter time perhaps a Kerry or Lieberman could be elected, but not now. Please run for President. Your country needs you (again).

I think what I like most about you is that you seem to have no hidden agenda. I would support you whether you ran as a Republican or Democrat. Please help SAVE AMERICA and be our next president.

As a 52-year-old, I've lived through many administrations. I have never been as dissatisfied with government leadership as I am today. The current administration has brought shame and embarassment to our country. We have been disgraced by our invasion of Iraq. Our unilateralism is costing us the support and respect of the entire world. President Bush has been a disaster. General Clark, please consider running for president. No other candidate will be able to attack the Bush administration without being labeled "unpatriotic." You alone have the qualifications to convince enough voters that Bush has gone too far.

Dear Gen. Clark, I have been so impressed by your compassion for our troops, families of troops, and Americans during this crisis in Iraq. I was in the Army during the Vietnam years and know how military life is. You not only care about the war itself, but why should we be there, and couldn't this have been handled a better way through diplomacy. You would have taken every step to see that war should only be the final step. I have also heard your views on domestic issues and I agree with them. There is not one candidate, who can come close to achieving what you can. Certainly George Bush can't. I believe in quality and justice for all. Everyone deserves it. Please consider running for president. Sincerely, Ed Kroeker

General Clark, We are at a unique and tremulous time in our history. After 911 the world opened up to us and we have arrogantly and dangerously turned our back on the world. I believe, unless this is reversed, we will pay the price for this arrogance for generations to come. In short, we need an honest and thoughtful man in the White House, a leader who will engage the international community in regard to our real terrorist threats, spend our limited resources on protecting our borders, and build a strong America through a top-notch (affordable) education system, an efficient healthcare system, and a robust infrastructure. The current field of democrats will not provide the leadership we need nor will they bring the necessary international experience that is required. I believe you are uniquely qualified for this challenge at this time and I truly hope that you run! If you do run, you can count on my support both through donations and volunteer labor. Sincerely, Chad Vickery

Dear General Clark: The Democratic Party and the nation are in desperate need of a presidential candidate who can speak to all citizens, and call us to our true ideals. We need a voice of courage, reason, and conviction to help us meet the challenges America faces, both abroad and at home. I have read your resume, and am convinced that your candidacy would lend serious hope to those of us who have despaired over the leadership in Washington in the last two and a half years. Please offer the American people a true choice, and continue your service to the nation by running for President. Sincerely yours, Douglas Wallace

Dear General Clark, I only recently learned of your possible candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the presidency. You are the first Democratic candidate that I have felt any real enthusiasm for, and I am sure this is true for a great many Democrats, independents, and Republicans. Dear General Clark, As a former Clinton Administration appointee, it is with a very heavy heart that I have seen our country go from peace and prosperity, to war and an extended downturn in the economy and escalating budget deficits, in just three short years. Yes, there have been dramatic events that have struck at the very fiber of our country in the last three years, but it is at the worst of times when we need the best of our leaders to assume the mantle of command. At this juncture in our Nation's history, America needs a Commander-in-Chief who is battle tested, and who is ready to lead us forward. And I am not just talking about America as a great big nebulous entity, but rather about Americans -- all of us who make up the mosaic that still makes us the melting pot of the world. We are desperately in need of someone who can articulate and communicate above the normal fray of the rough and tumble of politics, someone who will talk to the heart of the matter, and at the same time talk to the hearts of Americans. Someone that we can trust. We need to have hope that things will get better. We need hope that soldiers are not dying needlessly in violent missions in far-off lands. We need hope that the needs of those less fortunate in our society are taken into account. We need hope that our children will get the best education possible. We need hope that our Nation's environmental treasurers are not being pillaged in the name of national interests. We need hope that our individual rights and personal privacy are not being trampled in the name of national security. We need hope for a better tomorrow, and we need you! Please make tomorrow a better place for all Americans. Please run for President of the United States of America.

Dear Gen. Clark: I'm sending this letter via the website "draftwesleyclark.com," although I wanted to skip the pre-formulated text they included. I've spent the last few hours following every link on this site to try to learn more about you and your positions on the issues. It seems that the more I learn, the more I feel that you are simply the right man for the Democratic Party and for the country. Two of your main themes really spoke to me. First, I wholeheartedly agree with your insistance that terrorism should be fought with partners, not alone. Second, I agree with your focus on using technology and innovation to preserve our environment. I should mention that I'm 24 years old--national elections don't seem to address voters like me very much. (My friends and I don't exactly run to the polls to weigh in on Social Security and prescription drugs.) But younger voters do care passionately about the future--as I know from talking from my many American friends, and also many European friends that I've made while studying overseas. What we hope for is a safer world. That means safety for everyone, not just Americans, and safety from oppression and poverty, not just terrorism. I hope that you'll run for president. And I hope that you can run a positive campaign, one that does not just preach to the Democratic faithful. And, of course, it wouldn't hurt to have a genuine hero point out that no matter how tightly the emporer wraps himself in the flag, he still has no clothes. Best wishes, Andrew Lipman

Mr. Clark, My wife Karen and I first became familiar with you during your frequent appearances on CNN during the 2nd Gulf War. We were very impressed by you and joked with each other that we needed a leader like you as our president. Several months later I read the article from Esquire and was incredibly impressed by your biography, your integrity and your abilities. Until that article my wife and I had no idea that you might actually run. We both desperately want you to run and will work very hard to help get you elected if you do run. General Clark, Having heard your interview on NPR several weeks ago and learned what else I can, I believe that you have the qualifications to be an excellent President and are the only potential Democratic candidate who is able to defeat Bush in 2004. I rarely become involved in or contribute to political campaigns. If you run, I shall assist your campaign in any way I can and make a sizeable contribution. I believe that the current administration is destroying a social compact that has served the country well for generations and is creating national and international burdens that will take generations to undo. Because I believe that it is vital that the current administration not be continued in office and believe as well that no other Democratic candidate can defeat Bush, I believe that your candidacy will be of the greatest service to the nation. For identification purposes, I am Dane Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. If you declare your candidacy, you may call on me for any assistance in developing policy positions, furthering your candidacy, or anything else that I can usefully do.

America needs a new president. One who is up to the challenge of our uncertain times. One who can be a voice for common sense and moderation in these dangerous, uncertain times. One with the unquestionable leadership and foreign policy credentials necessary to win in 2004. General Clark, America needs you. Please run for president. Our country needs a man that we can be proud of instead of a man that we have to make excuses for...George W. I want to be able to say to my five small children, "Maybe you could be the president someday?" I want it to be a position of honor that is filled with a man or woman that is the best our country has to offer, not someone that is an embarressment to us. My brother was a P3 NFO, now he is a reservist. He became a Republican because of the military influence. He is questioning George Bush and his staff. Todd is not the type of person that questions his belief system...he is now. I am not sure that you have much time to put your hat into the race, but this country needs you. My children need a president that they can look up to. The presidency needs to be restored to a place of extreme importance and respect. PLEASE HELP OUR COUNTRY!! Please run for president.

General Clark, The world needs a strong and diplomatic American leader. I believe that you alone have the potential to improve worldwide opinion of our country. I am a political moderate who has grown increasingly frustrated with American politics. I am involved in international relations through both my work as an academic scientist and as a business consultant. Over the last 18 months, I have observed an astonishing increase in ill will toward our country. My foreign friends tell me regularly that the Bush administration’s unilateral arrogance is directly responsible for their anger. Please assist our country its time of desperation. The current Administration has created a vast web of irreversible decisions. I fear that they have become tangled. Based on this ongoing trend, it seems that we are more and more at risk every month by an order of magnitude. Unfortunately, the tangle of Foreign policy and domestic economic policy decisions must continue down this path until the next election. America will not be able to withstand another 4 years of this bumbling and plundering. In 2004, we must all decide to do something about it. I have seen you as a guest in the various news outlets throughout the year. I have also read fairly extensively about your background as well as your impressions of our current state of affairs as Americans. It is clear to me that you are the only one in the current pool of challengers that can, not just unseat the current Administration, but lead our Nation with credibility and strength. Please run---for America's (and for the rest of the world's) sake.

Dear Mr. Clark, My name is Steve. I am a 19 year old college student from New Jersey currently attending Rutgers University. I’m politically aware (have been for a long time), and have been searching for a candidate that best represents my views and attitudes toward the current domestic and world events that have rocked our world, so to speak, in recent years. As a “history and politics buff”, I’ve read several books on history and attended seminars in Washington DC for young, politically active people such as myself. I even went to President Bush’s inauguration to observe our great democracy in action. But in the past couple years since 9/11, I’ve seen what I would consider some of the most reckless policy making in American history, and it has me worried. I’ve also seen many moderate Democrats, notably those in Congress, simply stop really acting as an effective opposition party, thereby throwing off the balance our two party system offers and leaving many of us basically feeling voiceless. Though I usually align myself with the Democrats, I’m not one to vote for a Democratic candidate just because he or she is Democratic. Similarly I am not against current President Bush on the basis that he is a Republican, I oppose him on the basis that I believe we are worse off and live in a less safe world than we did before he entered office. I’ve known about you and your career since the Kosovo predicament, and was thrilled to hear on CNN that you’ve been a possible candidate for the President of the United States on a Democratic ticket. Since then, I’ve read about where you stand and have watched you on such programs as CNN’s Crossfire, and I was blown away at everything you had to say. There was no rhetoric, just straight, intelligent, factual talk about what you believe in, almost all of which I agree with. There was not a stammer, nor single hint of hesitation in what you had to say regarding your beliefs. The only hesitation I detected from you was in whether you would choose a party and run for President at all. Currently I support Howard Dean, as I like his message and the strength he seems to carry with him. However, and I must emphasize this, I believe you would make a MUCH better candidate than him. Your stance on domestic policies including such controversial issues as abortion and the Patriot Act are right on target. Your extensive experience and ideas on our foreign policy including the need to be more multilateral and smarter in fighting this War on Terror are similarly exactly what I believe is the right path for our nation. In short, Mr. Clark, I believe you are the PERFECT man for the job. You’re intelligent, well spoken, charismatic, well-educated, and have the experience necessary to become what I think could be one of the most successful administrations our nation has had. You’re reluctance to run only proves that you’re exactly what this nation needs at this dark time. And so I implore you sir, please run. The second you announce your candidacy is the second I switch from a half-hearted Dean supporter to a whole-hearted Clark campaigner, and I don’t think I’m the only one. I would do whatever it takes to help your campaign. The only thing stopping the Draft Clark campaign from taking off in a groundswell of support is the fact that most people I talk to have never heard of you, or if they have, don’t know what you stand for. I believe this would also change if you ran. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter sir. Sincerely, Stephen M. Gilroy Jr.

Dear General Clark, What is the worst that can happen if you declare your candidacy? At the VERY LEAST, greater exposure, will allow more people the chance to hear the truth on many issues. Your magnificent abilities with the English language will force some real, honest statements from other candidates. The average citizen, who has not been required to study the Constitution will learn something about it during your debates. Many people, like myself have not yet recovered from the transparent abuse of the system during and since the last presidential election. A conspiracy cannot be exposed when it is shamelessly done in the open without consequence. Since that day, the present administration has continued to shred the Constitution before the eyes of the people, but if the people don’t know what is really being done, they will accept the lies and the empty flag waving. When you speak, I learn. As a former Parliamentary Debate coach on the Ivy League Circuit, I know how much information can be conveyed during a strong, healthy debate. Your ideas being more widely disseminated will, in itself begin to inform the uninformed who are too lazy to get the information just for the sake of knowing. If the worst that can happen does happen, the people will still benefit. As many of us see it, “the worst that can happen” should really be “the beginning of what can happen” and we’ll have a president who will be a statesman rather than a politician. Please declare your candidacy soon. THE SUSPENSE IS KILLING US!!!
