Self-determination is great, and in Iraq, it is gaining. They went from: 1. Totalitarian dictatorship (very bad) to 2. Occupation by a benevolent occupying power (better) to 3. Self government (good) and maybe at some point to 4. Fully functional democracy (excellent) That's not self determination and I think you know that. What we have in Iraq is a rich benefactor remaking a country in its own image. I would be offended if Canada tried to do that to us, wouldn't you be? Besides its the farthest thing from self determination.Mr. De Genova is advocating actions that would leave Iraq in Totalitarian dictatorship - antithesis of self determination, so one would have to be very naive to believe that he really means that he wants self determination. Not at all.....he's advocating what the Iraqis, not Americans, think is best for the Iraqis. We're not about to do that but it probably would be the best thing albeit messy. If you get hung up on his radicalism and ignore the truth underneath There is no truth underneath. The man just hates America, and is just looking for vehicles to promote his hate of America. Warlords of Somalia stealing food from starving children? Fine. Butcher of Baghdad? Excellent. I am not going to argue with you. You know there's truth there and he doesn't hate the country, America. He hates the hypocrisy of our gov't and its inability to live up to the truths and values we hold self evident. The reason why I think he is on the right track is because the neocon thesis is wrong and will not work. One does not imply the other. The neocon thesis may or may not work, but de Genova is still wrong. I don't know how encouraging a people's self determination can be wrong. Would you explain? The guy is an idiot in his presentation but his underlying thesis makes good sense. Ignore the wrapping paper.......its academic BS You give him too much credit. Columbia University is turning out to be a cesspool of apologists and enablers of the worst that the world has to offer - radical islamic terror. And he is just one of many actors on the scene. Of course that's not what Columbia is. Its a good university that provides a good education. Open up your eyes, Joe. America is not always right; its just right more than most nations. Americans are not always good but they're good a lot of the time. The American way of life is not the best that humans can produce but its the best we can produce right now. America is not the end product but just the beginning of a better world. ted
