Since I seem to have gotten back on the subject of that documentary, one further thought. One bit reminded me of you. It was the grandson of a woman who ran a support group for parents of homosexuals, affiliated somehow with Focus on Families, who commented about the strong language she used in one of her letters, particularly the word, deviant. Also in that program I was sensitized to the use of the word, homophobe, which is sensitive much like "deviant." I might not have picked up on the sensitivity of "homophobe" had it not been for the grounding I got during the discussion here. I think we should be careful with both words. Problem is that there really aren't good alternatives for "homophobe" as there are for "deviant."
