Can anyone tell me how good Mercury engines actually are? I do not have a boat and am not really interested in purchasing one. Someone once made a statement to me (probably 15 years ago at least), "What is black and doesn't work?" It was evidently meant years ago as a racist comment (I do not mean it to be a racist comment here) and also was meant to imply that Mercury engines were not very good. From the following forum it appears that Mercury still does not have the highest standards with regards to quality.

Yamaha seems to have Mercury beat in terms of quality. It seems to me that even though Yamaha may get help from the Japanese government in terms of financial/export support, that does not necessarily transfer into support for better quality. Quality, it seems to me, needs to be ingrained into the company workforce from the top to the bottom.

Subject: Yamaha or Mercury

I am buying a new Lund Pro V and have a choice of either a Yamaha 2 stroke or a Mercury Optimax. I have heard good things about both motors, but haven't bought a new motor it over 10 years. Does anyone out there have an idea which motor is the better motor. thanx

I too have heard good things about both, but would probably go with the Yamaha if I could afford it. Smooth & quiet. Went deep sea fishing with a charter, had 2 Yamaha 250's on it. We were able to hold a normal conversation without screaming at 50mph. Guide said he'll never use anything but Yamaha's again. I also know the used to pay extra when you won certain Tournament events (yamaha Corporation), but don't know about any longer.

I HAVE 2 EA PERSONAL FRIENDS THAT SELL BOATS AND MOTORS AND BOTH OF THEM SELL MERCURY'S BECAUSE THEY ARE MADE CHEEP AND THEY GIT A KICK BACK FOR SELLING THEM. THE ONLY MOTOR IS A YAMAHA. I HAVE A 130 HP FOR 5 YEARS AND THE ONLY THING I HAVE REPLACED IS THE SPARK PLUGS. ECELLENT MOTOR. HONDA IS AN EXCELLENT MOTOR ALSO. MIDWAY

A nobrainer. Yamaha will last forever and have the best resell value. And you save time because you don`t need to get it on land to repair it like Mercury/MAriner/Evinrude/Johnson. Have you ever heard about Toyota cars. Yes, the same can be said about japanese outboards, and specially Yamaha. Be safe, take a safe choice.
