"it must be completed successfully"

You make a huge assumption when you assume it can be completed successfully. One problem with this particular hornet's nest is that there may not be a winning hand for the West to play. We may not be able to "improve" the mideast (improve meaning, I infer, that the mideast becomes more Western friendly). I guess it's possible we could be successful, but it doesn't seem likely. Once the electorate begins to really comprehend the costs involved, I don't think you've got any shot at even the slim chance of success.

Inviting all of Al Qaeda to battle in Iraq ( the center of 2/3 of the worlds oil reserves) and then running will not cause an outcome any Westerner is happy with.

Other Western countries will recognize the extreme seriousness of the situation and be well aware that Iraq must be a success at all costs.

Scary, isn't it? What makes me furious is the incompetence. I always thought that when you added up the numbers that a big bookkeeping entry putting oil assets on our side was probably the real reason for this. I am furious for the way this has been positioned, executed and communicated. Diplomatic failures, fiscal disasters, ego and intellectual dishonesty has put us where we are today.

These guys are incompetent. ANd that is the thing to be worried about. They blew the mission and they are going to blow any ideas they have for a Plan B. (I mean Plan A, since they never had a plan A.)

<Other Western countries will recognize the extreme seriousness of the situation and be well aware that Iraq must be a success at all costs.>

How many times, in how many contexts, have we heard these kind of predictions?

How many times have we heard confident assertions that, if the U.S. just acts Resolute and Firm and UnStoppable, the rest of the world will grumble and whine, and then get in line and meekly follow our lead?

How many times, have these hopes been dashed?

Hope springs eternal.

Read what the French just said. It's very clear, and they have been saying it very consistently: drop the unilateralism, drop the doctrine of preemptive war, drop the bullying of all your natural allies, drop the whole NeoCon agenda, if you want them to lift a finger to help you. The whole world is shouting this at the Bush Administration.
