It's just one of those things. It's why you see a lot of short sighted "Von Mises" type economists get all hot and bothered about short sighted "Keynesian" type economists and Roosevelt's "New Deal" in the 1930's depression era. Von mises attitude to the money supply is of course correct. Trouble is there has to be a plan to get there. Keynes I think would be aghast to see the blunders that are being made by the world governments today. Same situation applies though. A plan is needed.

The important FACT in LOGIC to consider is that the government has to be democratically elected for a FREE MARKET to even exist. No democratic government exists that actually makes itself more efficient by firing it's own workers as they are the government! Government bureaucracies only get bigger during hard times, never smaller. That is about a certain as the law of ENTROPY, or Newtons LAWS OF MOTION .

Now you have to have a tax base to pay for that government otherwise the country will go spinning into ever deeper debt. No good for anyone, especially a world power like the USA.

The only way to get a government smaller is for their to be a surplus of interesting jobs in the private sector, and every one drifts away from lack of interest in governing. There will be no need to govern so much in that circumstance imho.

btw to the original question (UK government call center jobs going to India) I posed, here is my suggestion..

I would export a proportion of the jobs to India and have two call centers. One in ther UK one in India. Then I would hire some (a few extra government jobs again) to analize the costs and quality of service of both centers. In this way the government can use the data and reports to make intelligent decisions as to future policy protecting jobs in the country and/or making further cost reductions within it's own departments. Whatever your politics, ignorance and stupidity should be avoided at all costs!

What really amazes me of course is that very few of our collective politicians in the UK, Europe, and the USA seem to have any clue what is going on or what to do. NOTHING. Fight a war in Iraq, without any plan to fix any of the very many problems there seems to be the top of their abilities so far.

Have a good day.

"beneficial for the world economy" is good I agree. So is fairness. Planning is important too.
