BHP Steel: China's demand remains key for global steel industry without OECD recovery

Shanghai. (Interfax-China) - Commenting on the global steel industry's prospects, BHP Steel Ltd.'s Managing Director and CEO, Mr Kirby Adams, said "Until we see a sustainable recovery in OECD economies, China's continuing demand for steel remains key."

With booming foreign direct investment and rising domestic disposable incomes, China steel consumption growth, which ran at more than 140 kg per head in 2002, is largely being driven by the construction, automotive and household appliance industries.
