Some speculation on why Clark is starting late...

<<...Dean absolutely can be caught. The general is a brilliant tactician and not at all indecisive. When there are 9 candidates, there is a palpable advantage to waiting to run... For one, he appears fresher... The race is already starting to be narrowed. He no longer has to run against 9 candidates really, just Dean, and thus now will get all of the non-Dean money & votes almost automatically (people want to work for, give & vote for a contender). Since he is not a politician, waiting allows him to work out answers to all of the litmus test-type questions he will be inevitably be asked, and to work on a campaign stump speech...>>
