I'll take a stab at a couple of the questions.

(3) Would like to install AdAware and/or Spybot program(s), but don't know which version to install... free, plus or pro

I don't know anyone running anything but the free version. It works like a champ cleaning up tracking cookies and other spyware. I'm also unaware of any other version of Spybot. The combination of the two should keep your system pretty clean.

The Cow posted a screen shot showing ZA Plus

If I posted about ZA Plus I didn't know it. I just looked on the Zonelabs site to see what Plus was. I'm using ZA Pro version 4. You can disable email scanning with the click of a button. If you don't want the extras such as email scanning, popup blocking, cookie control and cache cleaning you might want to stick with the free ZA. The only reason I upgraded was the assumption on my part that the protection provided by the firewall has been improved in the latest version.

I don't like the fact that my intrusion attempts and blocked access attempts don't match up numerically and am hoping to find info about it on GRC or ZA forums. So far I can't find out why.

"Sorry to be a pain about this, but I'm really confused about some of the security programs to install. I'd like to keep it as simple and safe as possible."

not being a pain. it's understandable that one can become confused about the abundance of security programs. keeping it all simple and safe is a noble goal. <g>

"(1) I downloaded BOClean last night and updated it this morning."

an excellent program and one that i run full time

"(2) Going to download Trojan Hunter today."

another good one. i keep it current and scan with it every time a new ruleset is released.

(3) Would like to install AdAware and/or Spybot program(s), but don't know which version to install... free, plus or pro. Any suggestions and why?

free is fine, imo. both of the above are very good. i'd look at two others if i were you... #reply-19237534

"(4) Have to put up a firewall and think ZA is the way to go, but, again... what version? I see you are using ZA Pro."

yes i am, for about a week now. i love it.

"The Cow posted a screen shot showing ZA Plus. And some thread members are using the free version. I want it to do the job, but don't know about the pop-up stoppers, etc. on the Pro version."

the ad blocker is better than any i have ever used. i was stunned to find that. not that i have tried so many, but i just thought the zap ad blocker was something they tacked on as an afterthought. apparently not. it is superb. zap has a cache cleaner that is handy (i don't use it, i use other means instead). but mainly the configurability of zap is what i like best. more cool stuff to tweak, to put it another way. of course, that leads to exasperation for some, and at the very least, a whole bunch more questions need answering. for that reason, and because you said, "I'd like to keep it as simple and safe as possible", i'd recommend the free version of zonealarm for you. it is quite adequate, and they don't come much easier.

"Also, I don't like the idea of shutting down my NAV e-mail scanner to use ZA's e-mail scanner. Would seem better to shutdown ZA's e-mail scanner if it's possible."

i run both the firewall email scanner and NAV's email scanner simultaneously. they appear to complement one another and running them in tandem surprisingly adds very little to the scan time.

"Do you use all the extras on the Pro version versus the Plus version."

sorry i don't know enough about plus to answer that. pro looked "deeper" so i went for it.

"(5) Installed Regcleaner (found a site linked to Wilders that had it for free download). How much do you trust it to delete entries and how do you find out what some of the entries are?"

i run RegCleaner 4.3 Build 780 and i trust it implicitly. i give it free run and i remove what it recommends. keep in mind that creating back ups is an option that can be set. you can find out more on each item by right-clicking.

"I know this is a lot to ask, but I would appreciate your input as well as the input of anyone else on the thread. Sorry for the long posts."

not at all. you ask good questions
