I'm afraid I can't be of much help in that area. The only recent books I've read that could remotely be called literature were recommendations from you. But I'd be happy to forward any recommendations from others.

I think that #1 Detective would be very suitable for high schoolers, but it's international and not really about OUR diverse community plus I don't know if I'd describe it as "vibrant." It's too gentle and thoughtful to be vibrant.

If you're not concerned about literature status, I'd recommend this mystery.

Blanche, the maid/detective, makes a good heroine, she struggles with her insecurities but perseveres and solves the crime. The theme is sensitive but presented in an easy reading mystery it's not heavy, more in the background. Book is an easy read. The protagonist uses non-standard English, though, which of course someone of her background would. PG rating, as I recall. This is a book I left at the pool for some minority high-schooler to find. Can't remember the name of that program where you release books into the wild.
