Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday he backed the sending troops to Iraq to help the US-led coalition restore security in the increasingly unstable country.

ìYes, I am in favour of that,î Erdogan said in a television interview. ìWe must not be afraid to go there.î

The United States has been urging its NATO ally to send troops to Iraq but the move is opposed by much of the Turkish public and most opposition MPs.

Ankara has yet to decide formally on the US request and any such decision needs to be approved by the parliament, which is in recess until October 1.

Erdogan said Turkey would assess whether to intervene depending on which region of Iraq its troops would be assigned to. ìAnd then we will decide if we will present (a motion to parliament),î he said.

Turkey is eager to improve relations with the United States, which soured after parliament refused to allow US soldiers to use its territory as a springboard for the invasion of Iraq.
