I thought of the Secret Life of Bees- but some school district had a legal problem with it, if I recall. I tried to pick books that were not engaged in a great deal of controversy (even though some of the books I picked have controversial elements, I would like them to fly under the radar). I made sure none of them were on the list of the 100 most challenged books- for example (this list can be found at the ALA web site). Some books that were recommended for high school were there, so I didn't pick those.
