"Remember the punishment meted out to Germany after World War I, and how the crushing debt was one of the factors leading to the rise of Hitler's National Socialist party. Why make the mistake again here ?"

From a review of the Marshall Plan.

marshallfoundation.org

"While the reaction to the Truman Doctrine had generally been positive, there was a worrisome undercurrent of opposition to increased foreign aid, and not just from Republican party isolationists. Many Democratic congressmen warned that they would not stand for the presentation of another administration policy fait accompli like the Greece-Turkey aid package."

These forces against aid to Europe are still in place today and will play a rôle in any aid program to Iraq. One can hope and agitate for that they will not prevail.

"I also believe that any nation that owes huge amounts for arms purchases incurred by a prior regime should have such debt summarily written off. Any nation that runs arms should be expected to take on the increased risk of not being paid if those arms are purchased on credit, whether it's the USA, Russia, France, etc, and deserves no sympathy if the "loans" default."

Agreed.

I know this is far reaching but it has implications effecting todays Foreign policy decisions.....eh

beyond 2050 China will be the pre eminent Manufacturing country in the World.....

the Middle East will become the Slums of the World and be called New Egypt.......

Oil will be replaced as a fuel source by new Synthetics and fuel cell based transportation.....

The new World Economy will be dominated by a new World Power known as "AMISCAN" an acronym for America, Isreal, Canada.....

these 3 countries will come together and form a new Nation State on the North American Continent..........

the Isreali people will leave Isreal and resettle in Canada....

America, Isreal and Canada will form one new Government, this new entity will have the three necessary ingredients to dominate the new World Economy, the Military, Monetary control and Food, we will become the Bread Basket to the World........

The Seat of Power for this new Nation will be located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.....

Each former Nation will maintain political offices in their former Capitols ie Washington DC, Ottawa..... Isreal will be given 2 new Capitols, 1 in Montreal and 1 in Vancouver.

AMISCAN will have 3 mandatory languages...
English, Hebrew, Hispanic.....French will be dropped.

I am sure this will sound far fetched to some but think about it and you will be able to grasp it.

I have more about the new AMISCAN weapon systems(mostly Laser based Defensive)but this will have to come in a later post.

regards

Dennis, irrespective of whether Iraqis can pay money to Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, I don't believe they have incurred those debts. It was Saddam's gang which incurred the debts and two of the debtors are dead [Uday and Qusay, so they won't be paying anything]. Uday's and Saddam's victims owe Kuwait not a single thing.

If anything, Kuwait should be absorbed into Iraq and the oil wealth shared among a greater number of people in the area. Some of the oil fields cross the border and were part of the original conflict between Kuwait and Iraq.

Kuwait owes the Iraqis, not the reverse. Britain's artificial line in the sand was unwise and led to the Kuwait/Iraq war. The UN effectively owns both now, by right of conquest, and is in the process of selecting a government for Iraq, having allowed the original "owners" in Kuwait to retake possession of Kuwait, [unwisely in my opinion].
