I do not think the 1987 experience is really comparable to today's

The 1987 crash was really just a sharp correction in an ongoing secular bull-A secular bull which still had a long way to go

Today we are in a cyclical bull in the context of what appears to be a secular bear

What will happen to PM equities is anybody's guess in the event of a drastic market downturn.

When the general equities market will began another down turn is also anybody's guess

Bush and Greenspan will do all in their power to prevent a general equities collapse until after the election.
And everything they might do should probably be friendly to the PMs

IMHO
