RTS Breaks Record 530

MOSCOW (Prime-Tass) -- The RTS index reached a level unseen since October 1997, topping 530 Friday as shares edged up 1 percent to 2.5 percent. Trading volumes remained low, indicating that speculative investors had driven the market up.

The benchmark RTS stock index closed Friday at 530.94, up 1.03 percent or 5.42 points from the previous closing.

Trading volume Friday fell to $18.4 million from $23.7 million Thursday.

The upward dynamics on foreign exchanges helped the stocks to open positively and keep rising all day long. The Dow Jones and Nasdaq indices closed Thursday, which helped drive the Russian market up Friday morning.

Domestic factors also prompted the increase, with good corporate news from Slavneft, TNK-BP and LUKoil encouraging market players to make purchases.

I've been nuclear short for a while, and like a clown in 2000 and 2001, I'm not too happy <ng>
