While the "fear" would of course be maximized by a "10 sigma" type event, it might just be a growing conviction that "all is not well" that could linger and/or intensify for years.

Of course the difficult thing about "fear" is that it is not quantifiable, but then again it has proven difficult to quantitatively value/predict the gold price.
