Many generations ago, Dostoyevsky asked the question (paraphrasing, from memory) - "Let's say, you know a way to improve destinies of people everywhere, but in order to achieve this purpose you must cause suffering to one single child. Is it ethical to do so? Should you go ahead and sacrifice the well being of that one child for the larger good?"

It is typical for True Believers to be willing to accept sacrifices - of others, and often of themselves - in order to achieve their goals. The problem is that somewhere along the way the Gandhian observation kicks in, the one which states that the nature of the Means one uses will determine the eventual Ends. In the end, the extremists tend to get results which are very different from their original intent. Often such results are catastrophic. For examples, think about the harm caused by the Bolsheviks, or by the Nazis, or by the Pol Pot crazies to their fellow Cambodians.

There are extremists in every group (including Atheists), and the larger is the group the more numerous they will be. There are many millions of Islamic extremists out there. In essence, they are revolutionaries who want to change the world into a place ruled by religious visionaries (like themselves). I think that we ain't seen nothin' yet, and that they are destined to cause plenty of more trouble in the future.

Can't say it in fewer words than this... -g.
