I doubt the more troops would have prevented the bomb and mass killing.. This was an area that troops were staying out as it was a holy place and they were showing respect for them.... Israel doesn't stop car bombs ... our troops are not really in a position to check every car or truck in a city the size of Baghdad and other locations. The best response is to get Iraq people to take charge of their responsibilities.
The exploding oil pipeline is a good example of them hurting themselves and others standing by.

John,
You are two for two with great article postings this morning. Assuming Kagan is right, how do we pay for the next division(since we are alreaady deficited out) without cancelling out the bush tax cuts? ANS: A war surtax? How about a X% surcharge on the actual amount taxed? That would guarantee maintenance of progressivity. For instance a low earner who payed $2000 in taxes would have a $200 surcharge. A middle earner with $20,000 in taxes four pay $2000 and so on. Politically Bush could justify this as purely a temporary war tax and it would not change the structural reform of the tax cut for his supply side supporters. Then we can get on with the military spending along with some of Kyrosi's infrastructure investments free of the politics of tax cuts. Just an idea. Mike

Re Kagan's Op Ed.....
Oh boy...excellent example of the rats leaving the sinking ship... Krystol and Kagan did the same with their Weekly Standard piece and even the Prince of Darkness is starting to look for a life preserver. If this keeps up it won't be long and Rice and Gen Rove will start to get their slams from "highly placed Pentagon sources" or vice versa and then the final blow..... Adelmann will stop wearing his flag tie.
